The process of controlling fears

The idea of fear and the process to overcome it is a major theme in Divergent. “'Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.'” (pg. 132) The Dauntless initiates spend a lot of time confronting their fears in fear landscapes. The whole initiation process is based on fears. In their fear landscapes they work on moving past them and refusing to let them bother them anymore. They work on controlling their fears. Dauntless members know that they can not let their fears control them. Tris and Four are both forced to face their fears throughout the book. Four climbs the Ferris wheel with Tris when fear is one of Fours biggest fears. Tris faces her fear when she moves away from her family into a different faction. Citizens fear the divergent because they can not be controlled. "'Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up. I used to think the Dauntless were fearless. That is how they seemed, anyway. But maybe what I saw as fearless was actually fear under control.'" (p. 239)
Making choices that change your life

"'Tomorrow at the Choosing Ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them.'"(pg 2)
One choice can define them. They decide if they want to pass or fail initiation. One choice can transform, destroy or kill them. They have to make choices and realize what is right. They have to face hard decisions and sometimes they have to choose what is right and what they want and not what others expect them to do. They decide what faction they will live in for the rest of their life. They have to live with their decisions. "'It is my choice now, no matter what the test says. Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Divergent.'" (pg. 23) In Divergent the characters have to make life choices instead of just going with the crowd.
