Reason 1: Action
This book is filled with action. Every page you turn you never know what is going to happen. I read the book and then reread the book because it was so good. It always kept me on my toes. You never know what is going to happen next. Someone could jump off a building or have a gun pressed against their head. The next scene could be life or death for someone. The initiates have to learn how to throw knifes and shoot guns. It is very action packed when they are learning. It is like you are learning right with them. “'We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”' (pg. 220) Watching people become better friends throughout the book and seeing them stand up for each other is really fun to watch. They stand up for what they believe in. Seeing how the characters respond when they are faced with their worst fears has a lot of action to it.
Reason 2: A relatable main Character
Tris has to face many difficulties. She struggles to deal with her differences all throughout the book. Even though most of us are not learning how to throw a knife or shoot a gun for daily survival, we can relate to her. She does not have a special super power. She is just a normal 16 year old girl. She grows and learns about herself throughout the book. “'And I'm the kind of person who does not let inconsequential things like boys and near death experiences stop her.'” (pg. 165). Nobody wants anything to be able to stop them. Tris shows us how to work through our problems. She shows us how to grow and learn from our experiences. She is easy to relate to because she is facing some of the difficulties that everyone faces at some point in their life.
Reason 3: Different kind of society
They split up people into a factions based on a test. They force them to choose between their families or who they truly are. "Faction before blood." (pg. 43) They are supposed to be more dedicated to their faction then their family. Each faction has a different place in society. Each faction has something that it tries to hide. Every faction thinks that it is the best and all the other factions are not important. This causes problems throughout the factions. Tying to figure out what faction they belong to is hard, but it is even harder trying to find a place in that faction. The characters are forced to decided what they value most or what they deem as the most important value.
Reason 4: It is a series and a movie
Being able to see a book come to life is really amazing. You are able to actually see the characters. We all picture what the characters will look like, but it is really cool to be able to see them come alive in a movie. If you read Divergent and watch the movie, you can compare the book to the movie which is always fun.
Divergent is like the Hunger Games so if you like that series I would definitely recommend the Divergent series.
Once you read Divergent you can read Insurgent and then Allegiant. They are all well written books. I would definitely recommend reading all of the books. After reading one book you always want more. After Divergent there are two more books so it keeps it interesting. It is a really hard series to put down.
